Manitoba Forage Council Project

Extension involves the provision of science-based information and technology to agricultural producers to support their adoption of innovative agricultural practices designed to achieve specific goals. These typically relate to agronomic production, but today also include environmental or ecological objectives, among others.

Unfortunately, the availability of one-on-one extension services for agricultural producers has been declining in recent years, as these important services can be time consuming and resource intensive. However, virtually all extension research shows that some form of direct producer contact is required for the majority to adopt new technologies and/or practices. There is a need for a cost-effective means by which to fill this gap.

This project will: develop a cost-effective, scalable extension approach for the benefit of grassland managers and ecosystems; design a curriculum of targeted extension support related to grasslands management; and coordinate funding from private, NGO, public, and industry funding sources for specific agricultural and conservation extension outcomes.

Friends of Delta Marsh Field Station Project

Delta Marsh Field Station has been generating highly relevant knowledge regarding the natural and managed ecosystem functions of Manitoba’s large lakes, coastal and other inland wetlands, and watersheds since 1966, and the need for this information is more urgent now than ever before. However, current water management concerns related to Lake Manitoba combined with university budget limitations are working to threaten the operational viability of Delta Marsh Field Station, placing its future existence in jeopardy. Friends of the Field Station (FOFS) is seeking to significantly increase its levels of financial and other support, engaging private and public funding and partnerships to assure the long-term future of the station as a vital research facility located on land under the authority of Manitoba Conservation.

Since the original gift of land and lodge from William Bain in 1962, the history of private efforts working to support the public interest has been strongly associated with Delta Marsh Field Station. This powerful legacy represents a realistic foundation from which to develop a renewed vision for this important facility. Many people have used the Delta area for research, hunting, conservation, and simple enjoyment of its natural and recreational amenities for generations. It is a natural fit to explore the possibility of a more permanent Delta Marsh Field Station strategy which engages the individuals and organizations who care about it.

This project will: engage FOFS members and others in the development of a long-term plan for Delta Marsh Field Station; undertake a broad consultation and SWOT analysis related to the site’s future; and conduct an economic feasibility study to guide future FOFS efforts.

Misipawistik Cree Nation Project

For the past few years, the Province of Manitoba and Misipawistik Cree Nation (MCN) have been investigating greenhouse production and its potential in northern communities. Initial exploration of the concept also involved the Jewish National Fund’s Prairie Region office, based in Winnipeg. The result has been the selection of MCN as the location of a pilot project meant to fund the development of a greenhouse, to showcase highly efficient Israeli-developed greenhouse technology, and test it in a northern community setting and climate.

The greenhouse is intended to operate both as a commercial facility and as a community asset – selling products outside the community but also engaged with the community in the supply of healthy, fresh, and safe produce. The project will serve as a pilot project and training centre for further such greenhouse projects in northern Manitoba.

This project will: engage the MCN community in the production of locally-grown food; explore resource use efficiency and biomass management options; and advance plans associated with future commercial greenhouse operations at MCN.
